Enable Passthrough Mode on the AT&T BGW210 Gateway
Please note that you are personally responsible for any changes that you make to your gateway.
By default, the BGW210 gateway AT&T provides for their fiber service acts as a modem, router, and a WiFi access point. This is great for the majority of households who are not looking to manage additional networking equipment.
If, on the other hand, you are interested in having more control over how the internet is made available to your devices (i.e., you want to use your own router), then you’ll want to put your gateway into passthrough mode.
This article outlines the steps I followed to:
- Put my gateway into passthrough mode
- Access the administrative screens, if needed, after enabling passthrough mode
Gather Required Information
Before beginning, you will need two pieces of information:
- Device Access Code – This string is found on a sticker on the BGW210 gateway
- The MAC address for the WAN port on your router
Update Your Gateway
You may need to force your router to request a new IP address from the gateway following the completion of these steps
These are the steps I followed when putting my gateway into passthrough mode:
- Open 192.168.1.254 in your web browser
- Navigate to Home Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced Options
- Update “Wi-Fi Operation” to “Off” for “2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Radio Configuration”
- Update “Wi-Fi Operation” to “Off” for “5 GHz Wi-Fi Radio Configuration”
- Click the “Save” button at the bottom of the page
- Navigate to Firewall > Packet Filter
- Click “Disable Packet Filters” button
- Navigate to Firewall > IP Passthrough, and make the following changes:
- Allocation Mode: Passthrough
- Passthrough Mode: DHCPS-fixed
- Passthrough Fixed MAC Address (Manual Entry): Enter the MAC address for your router’s WAN port
- Navigate to the Device tab
- Click the “Restart Device” button
Accessing the Gateway’s Administrative Screens After Update
You can leave your router connected to the gateway when performing these steps
- Connect a computer (not the router) via ethernet to one of the three available yellow ethernet jacks on the gateway
- The gateway should assign a 192.168.1.x IP address to this computer
- Open 192.168.1.254 in the computer’s web browser
